Clearly, a sports stadium should be designed with the best possible view of the grounds from as much of the building as possible. Equally, because such a building will regularly be filled to capacity with large crowds, safety from hazards such as fire must also be considered.
For the walls between internal viewing areas and the open stands at Eden Park, Steelguard has provided what is thought to be the largest installation of flush-glazed, fire-rated glass in the southern hemisphere, says company director Chris Sai Louie. This passive fire-rated system, which incorporates movement joints, makes a substantial contribution to the fire safety of the building. "An advantage of passive fire-rated glazing is that the system will provide fire protection even if mechanical fire safety systems fail, as for example in the case of an earthquake," Chris Sai Louie says.
Steelguard also manufactured and installed the glazing on the balconies and doors at Eden Park. Large amounts of structural glazing ensure internal areas in the stands have good natural light and unobstructed views of the grounds.
